Major Drug Seizure on N2 Highway: Western Cape Police Make Arrest

WESTERN CAPE – In a successful effort to combat the influx of illicit drugs into the Western Cape, law enforcement members seized drugs with an estimated street value of about R1 million on the N2 highway at Plettenberg Bay. A 30-year-old man faced charges in connection with the discovery and appeared in the Plettenberg Bay Magistrates’ court on Monday, January 22, 2024.

The operation unfolded on Friday, January 19, 2024, around 05:00, when members of the Rural Flying Squad strategically set up a vehicle checkpoint at the entrance to Plettenberg Bay. During routine checks, they pulled over a Chevrolet bakkie, where the driver’s suspicious behavior caught their attention. A subsequent search revealed packets of Tik stashed inside a compartment on the side of the vehicle. The police confiscated 3.08 kilograms of Tik and promptly arrested the driver. The vehicle was also seized.

The accused appeared in court on a charge of dealing in drugs, and the matter was postponed to Friday, January 26, 2024. The accused was remanded in custody.

Investigations suggest that the seized drugs were intended for delivery in George.

The Western Cape provincial police management commended the members for their efforts in intercepting the consignment, emphasizing that the seizure aligns with policing priorities to eradicate drug trafficking along entry and exit routes of the province.
